# Rift vs Cloudflare Artifacts

Artifacts gives every agent task its own Git repository. Rift syncs whole folders, including the files Git does not track.

### What Cloudflare Artifacts is

Cloudflare Artifacts is versioned storage for agents that uses the Git protocol. It is built for very large numbers of small repositories, one for each project, session or task, and any Git client can clone and push to them. It has been in open beta since October 2026.

### How they differ

Artifacts grants access by the repository, with tokens that your own Worker or API layer mints. It carries what Git tracks. Rift grants access by the folder and carries every file in it.

- Identity
  - Cloudflare Artifacts: A repository token minted by the owner's Worker or API layer.
  - Rift: A key that each machine and agent makes for itself. No account.

- Smallest share
  - Cloudflare Artifacts: One repository, as read or write.
  - Rift: A folder, a subfolder or one file, as read or write.

- Who checks access
  - Cloudflare Artifacts: Cloudflare.
  - Rift: Each machine that receives a file checks the grant itself.

- Who can read your files
  - Cloudflare Artifacts: Cloudflare stores the repositories. We found no documented option for customer-held keys.
  - Rift: Only the machines you shared with. Rift Cloud holds ciphertext.

- When your machines are off
  - Cloudflare Artifacts: Files stay available from Cloudflare.
  - Rift: Files stored in Rift Cloud stay available.

### Which to choose

Choose Cloudflare Artifacts when

- Your agents already work through Git.
- You build on Cloudflare Workers.
- You want history for every change.

Choose Rift when

- Agents produce files that do not belong in a repository.
- An agent should receive one folder out of a larger project, with no separate repository made for it.
- The other side's agent should hold its own key and need no token from you.
