# Rift vs Mem0

Mem0 stores facts an agent has learned about a user. Rift syncs the files an agent works on.

### What Mem0 is

Mem0 is a memory service for agents. It extracts facts from conversations, stores them, and returns them by meaning through one search call. It is available as a hosted platform and as open-source software that you run yourself.

### How they differ

Mem0 stores what an agent has learned about a user and returns it by search. Rift syncs files between machines.

- Identity
  - Mem0: A Mem0 API key for one organization and project.
  - Rift: A key that each machine and agent makes for itself. No account.

- Smallest share
  - Mem0: Membership of a project, or a project API key.
  - Rift: A folder, a subfolder or one file, as read or write.

- Who checks access
  - Mem0: Mem0's servers, or your own server when you host it.
  - Rift: Each machine that receives a file checks the grant itself.

- Who can read your files
  - Mem0: Mem0, on the hosted platform. You, when you host it.
  - Rift: Only the machines you shared with. Rift Cloud holds ciphertext.

- When your machines are off
  - Mem0: Memories stay available from the hosted platform.
  - Rift: Files stored in Rift Cloud stay available.

### Which to choose

Choose Mem0 when

- Agents need to recall facts across sessions.
- You want search by meaning.

Choose Rift when

- The state is files, such as reports, datasets and video.
- The files have to be on the agent's own disk.
- A cloud should store the files and be unable to read them.

### Using them together

An agent can keep facts in Mem0 and files in Rift.
